How Punch Pizza Began

Punch pizza was born from a simple belief: everyone deserves extraordinary pizza made with honest, real ingredients. Since opening our doors on Grand Avenue in 2010, we have been crafting authentic Neapolitan-style punch pizza that brings our community together around the table.

Our founders, John and Maria Andrus, traveled through Naples, Italy in 2008 and fell completely in love with the art of wood-fired pizza. They returned to St Paul determined to bring those flavors to Minnesota — sourcing local produce, importing authentic San Marzano tomatoes, and mastering the 900°F wood-burning oven that gives every pie its unmistakable char and chew.

Today, Punch pizza serves hundreds of guests daily across our St Paul location, with our team of passionate pizzaiolos hand-stretching every single dough ball to order. We source from over 15 local farms, keeping our menu seasonal, fresh, and deeply rooted in the flavors of the Upper Midwest.

From a single wood-fired oven on Grand Ave to a beloved St Paul institution — here is how Punch pizza grew.

  1. 2008

    The Inspiration

    John and Maria Andrus travel through Naples, Italy and discover the true art of Neapolitan pizza. The seed for Punch pizza is planted in a small trattoria on Via dei Tribunali.

  2. 2010

    Grand Avenue Opens

    Punch pizza opens at 769 Grand Ave, St Paul with one wood-burning oven, five menu items, and a team of four passionate people. Lines wrap around the block within weeks.

  3. 2012

    Best Pizza in Minnesota

    Minneapolis–St Paul Magazine names Punch pizza the Best Pizza in Minnesota. The recognition fuels growth and draws national attention to our artisan punch pizza philosophy.

  4. 2015

    Farm Partnership Program

    We launch our Local Farm Partnership Program, formalizing relationships with 15 Minnesota farms to source seasonal, organic ingredients that define our menu each quarter.

  5. 2018

    Catering & Franchise Debut

    We introduce our catering program for events and begin exploring franchise opportunities, allowing other communities to experience the signature Punch pizza style.

  6. 2022

    Online Ordering Launch

    Punch pizza goes digital with a fully integrated online ordering platform, making it easier than ever to order your favorite punch pizza for pickup or delivery across St Paul.

    15 Years & Growing Strong
